Write markdown together.Keep it yours.

A shared editor for teams who write in markdown. Write together live, each in the view you like. Every document is a plain .md file, and you can download any document you have permission to export.

Colletta is in private beta. Access is by invitation while we refine the product with a small group of early users.

Launch plan

We roll out to two pilot teams first, then to everyone.

Done: Write the getting started guide

To do: Schedule the team kickoff

NOTE

Documents you can export download as plain .md files.

Grace writes in Live and Alan in Source, in the same document at the same time. Split is available on wider screens.

Shared editing, without giving up your files

Edit together in the browser, and keep every document as plain markdown.

Everyone sees it their own way

Live formats the text as you type and shows markdown only on the line you're editing. Source shows every character. Split puts the markdown beside a formatted preview. Each person picks their own, so one of you can work in Live while another works in Source.

Wants plain files and live editing

You are Ada here. Live formats as you type and shows the markdown only where your cursor is. Source shows every character. Split is available on wider screens.

Write in the same document at once

Every cursor carries a name, and you can follow someone through a long document. Edits combine as people type, even in the same paragraph, and a short network drop reconnects on its own.

What went well

Search shipped a week early

Comments are anchored to the text

To do: Write up the release notes

Everyone in the document at once, each with a named cursor. Follow someone to move with them.

Links that survive a rename

Type [[ to link a document or one of its headings. Rename or move the document and the link still works. Each document lists what links to it, and if a heading you link to is renamed, Colletta offers a one-click fix.

## Before we ship - [x] Dates agreed in [Launch plan › Timeline](/w/team/d/1#timeline) - [ ] Check [Security review](/w/team/d/2) with Grace

Before we ship

Done: Dates agreed in Launch plan › Timeline

To do: Check Security review with Grace

Links point at the document, not its name, so renames and moves never break them. Each document shows what links to it.

Remove someone, and it happens right away

Choose who can read and who can edit each folder and document, and keep some to a few people. Before you restrict one, you see who will lose access. If you remove someone while they have a document open, it turns read-only in front of them.

Two roles open in the first quarter.

You no longer have access to this document.

Someone with Full access restricts the document while Alan has it open. His editor turns read-only at once.

This is the file you download

The document from the top of this page, downloaded as a .md file. It's CommonMark with GitHub Flavored Markdown and a few extensions such as callouts, so git, your editor and other markdown tools can read it.

The things you'll use every day

  • Comments and mentions

Comment on a few words, and the thread stays attached while people keep editing. Type @ to mention a person or a team, and they get a notification if they can open the document.

  • History

Versions are saved as you go. Name the ones that matter, look back at any of them, and restore. A restore can be undone, too.

  • Search and quick open

Search every document you can open, or jump to one by typing part of its title.

    Ctrl+KCtrl+P
  • Templates

Meeting notes, a decision record and a project brief are built in, and any published document can become a template.

  • Keyboard first

There's a shortcut for almost everything and a slash menu for the rest. Tables can be edited without touching the mouse.

    /Ctrl+/
  • A safety net

Deleted documents stay in the trash for 30 days. If your connection drops, your edits are kept on your device, when your browser allows storage, and sent when it's back.

Before you sign up

If one of these matters to your team, another tool may suit you better.

It isn't built for

  • Spreadsheets, databases or kanban boards inside documents.
  • Working offline. You need a connection to open a document.
  • Hosting a public website or wiki. A public link shares one document at a time.
  • Company wikis with hundreds of people and detailed admin controls.

How it compares

What we don't do

  • We never sell your data or show ads, and we never use the content of your documents for analytics or testing.
  • We will never train AI on your documents, images or data.

How we work

If you leave

You take your writing with you. Any document you have permission to export downloads as a .md file. A folder or a whole workspace downloads as a zip of those documents, with the images uploaded to them. Drafts are left out unless you choose to include your own drafts.

Comments, open suggestions and version history aren't included, and links between documents still point to Colletta. Exports that rewrite those links are planned.

Questions

Can I use it today?

Colletta is in private beta, and access is by invitation. Join the waitlist, and we'll contact you by email when a place is available for your team.

What if we try it and don't like it?

You can leave and take your writing with you. Any document you have permission to export downloads as a .md file, and a whole workspace as a zip of those documents, with the images uploaded to them. Drafts are left out unless you include your own, and comments, open suggestions and version history stay in the app.

What you can take with you

Are my documents really plain markdown?

Yes. Every document is CommonMark with GitHub Flavored Markdown, plus a few extensions written as text, like callouts. A .md download keeps that markdown.

What do you do with our data?

Only what it takes to run Colletta for you. We never sell your data or show ads, and we never use the content of your documents for analytics or testing. We never train AI on your documents, images or data either.

Who can see our documents?

People in your workspace, within the access you set. You choose who can read and who can edit each folder and document, and you can keep some to a few people besides the workspace Owners and people with Full access to a folder above. A draft is visible only to its author and the co-authors they invite until it is published. A public link shares one document with anyone who has the link.

Security and privacy

What will it cost?

Nothing during the private beta, and we don't ask for payment details. We'll publish final pricing before general availability. In the planned pricing each Owner, Admin and Member is a seat: free for up to 5 seats, then $6.67 a seat a month on yearly billing. Viewers are free up to a limit, and the bill is capped at $199 a month.

Planned pricing

What if someone deletes or overwrites something?

Versions are saved automatically, and you can name the ones that matter. You can undo a restore, too. Deleted documents stay in the trash for 30 days.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, for reading and writing, in light and dark. On a phone, the More menu opens the outline and the people in a document, where you can follow someone.
