Write together

Several people can type in the same document at once, see where everyone is, and never merge anything by hand.

Live cursors
Everyone's cursor shows in the text with their name, and the header lists who has the document open.
Follow mode
Follow a teammate and your view moves with theirs, which helps when someone is walking you through a document.
Quiet reconnects
A short network drop reconnects on its own. Edits made while you're cut off are kept on your device, when your browser allows storage, and sent when you're back.
Who wrote what
Turn it on in History to color each person's text.

What went well

Search shipped a week early

Comments are anchored to the text

To do: Write up the release notes

Everyone in the document at once, each with a named cursor. Follow someone to move with them.

Markdown, formatted as you type

Live view looks like a finished document and shows the markdown only on the line you're editing.

Three views
Live, Source, or Split with a preview that scrolls alongside. Each person picks their own.
Tables, tasks and more
Tables, callouts, footnotes, task lists and images, all written as markdown text.
Code blocks
Highlighting for more than 20 languages, with a copy button in Live view and Split.
Math and diagrams
Write formulas and Mermaid diagrams as text, and see them drawn in Live view and Split.
Long documents
Fold a section under its heading, jump around with the outline, and keep an eye on the word count.

Interview notes

We keep our docs in git, but nobody edits them together.

Wants plain files and live editing

- Uses make docs to publish every Friday

You are Ada here. Live formats as you type and shows the markdown only where your cursor is. Source shows every character. Split is available on wider screens.

Write faster

Most things have a keyboard shortcut. For everything else there's a toolbar and a slash menu.

Read the guide: Write faster
  • Slash menu

Type / to insert a heading, a table, a callout or a code block.

  • Shortcuts

Ctrl+/ (Cmd+/ on a Mac) lists every shortcut, and the toolbar shows them when you hover.

  • Tables from the keyboard

Add, move, delete and sort rows and columns without reaching for the mouse.

  • Smart paste

Paste from Word, Google Docs or a web page, and the formatting turns into markdown.

  • Small helpers

Emoji with a colon, today’s date with /today, and find and replace with regular expressions.

Find your way around

Folders when you want structure, and search when you'd rather not click through them.

Read the guide: Find your way around
  • Folders

Arrange documents in a folder tree and move them by dragging.

  • Search

Search finds the words you type, and related pages about the same thing, even when they use different words.

  • Quick open

Press Ctrl+P and type a few letters of a title. Ctrl+Shift+P opens a list of commands.

  • Home page

Pick up where you left off, and see what others edited recently.

  • Templates

Start from Meeting notes, Decision record or Project brief, or make any published document a template.

  • Favorites and duplicates

Star the documents you use most, and copy one to start the next.

  • Import

Bring in a zip of markdown files or an Obsidian vault, with a preview of warnings and unresolved links first.

  • My tasks

Mention someone in a task-list item to assign it, with a date as its due date. If they can open the document, the open task is listed in their My tasks.

Comments, mentions and notifications

Talk about the text, suggest changes without making them, and bring people in with @.

Read the guide: Comments, mentions and notifications
  • Comments on the exact words

Select some text and comment. The thread stays attached to those words while people edit around them.

  • Threads

Reply, resolve a thread once it's settled, and reopen it if it isn't.

  • Suggest changes, stay plain markdown

Propose new words in place, and someone who can edit the document accepts or rejects them. Suggestions live beside the text, so downloads stay plain markdown.

  • Mentions

Type @ to mention a person, a team or a date. Mentions show as chips with current names.

  • Notifications

Mentions and replies to your threads arrive in the bell, inside the app.

  • People and teams

Person cards, profile pages and team pages show who is who.

Access and security

Decide who can read and who can edit. Changes take effect at once, even in documents people have open.

Roles
Invite-only workspaces, with Owner, Admin, Member and Viewer roles. Viewers can't edit the text, but can comment and suggest changes by default.
Drafts
A draft is visible only to its author and co-authors until it is published. If the author leaves the workspace, its Owners can recover the draft.
Sharing
Give a person or a team Full access, Can edit or Can view on one folder or document.
Restricted folders
Keep a folder or document to a few people, besides the workspace Owners and people with Full access to a folder above it, and see who loses access before you confirm.
Share a page with anyone
A public link lets anyone read one document without signing in. Public pages ask search engines not to index them, and Stop ends the link at once.
Immediate access changes
Remove someone and the document turns read-only in front of them.
Sign-in and two-factor
Changes to who can see what need a two-factor sign-in, whoever makes them.

## Hiring plan Two roles open in the first quarter.

Hiring plan

Two roles open in the first quarter.

You no longer have access to this document.

Someone with Full access restricts the document while Alan has it open. His editor turns read-only at once.

History and downloads

Versions are saved as you go, and you can download any document you have permission to export as plain markdown.

Read the guide: History and downloads
  • Automatic versions

Versions are saved while you work, with no button to remember.

  • Named versions

Name the ones that matter, like "Sent for review". Automatic cleanup never removes a named version.

  • Restore

Look back at any version, compare it with today, and restore it. A restore can be undone.

  • Trash

Deleted documents stay in the trash for 30 days.

  • Plain markdown

CommonMark with GitHub Flavored Markdown, plus a few extensions written as text, like callouts.

  • Downloads and print

One document as .md, or a folder or a whole workspace as a .zip of the documents you can export, with the images uploaded to them. Drafts are left out unless you include your own. Or print a document as a PDF.

Comfortable to read and use

Set it up the way you like to read, use it from the keyboard, and pick it up on a phone.

Read the guide: Comfortable to read and use
  • Themes

Light, dark, or whatever your system uses. The light theme has a warm, paper-like background.

  • Text

Sans serif, serif or monospace text in three sizes, and three color themes for code.

  • Accent color

Pick your own accent color. It only changes your screen.

  • Keyboard and access

Everything works from the keyboard, checked against WCAG 2.2 AA with automated tests.

  • Phones

Layouts for phones and narrow windows.

  • Reduced motion

When your system asks for reduced motion, transitions are instant and the follow highlight stays still.

Planned

These features are planned and not available yet.

  • Export and backup to GitHub, and exports you can restore
  • Exports that rewrite links between documents for other tools
  • Sign in with Google or GitHub
  • Team spaces with team admins and guests
  • Search filters by folder, author and date
