Download, copy and print
Your documents are plain markdown files, and you can take them with you at any time. Anyone who can open a document can download it, and any markdown tool can open the result. A workspace can turn this off for people who can only view (see Sharing settings): they still read, but can’t download, print or copy as markdown, and Download all leaves out what they can’t export.
Download one document
Section titled “Download one document”The document’s More menu (…) has three downloads:
- Download .md: the document’s markdown, as Colletta stores it. It’s also in the document’s menu in the sidebar.
- Download .md for other tools: the same markdown, with the few things only Colletta understands rewritten so other tools show them well. See below.
- Download .html: a single web page you can open in any browser or attach to an email.
Uploaded images in a downloaded .md still point at Colletta, so they need access through the app to show.
Images from other sites keep their original addresses. To keep uploaded images with the text, download the folder or
the workspace as a zip, or use Download .html (within its image limit, below).
Download .md for other tools
Section titled “Download .md for other tools”Choose this when the file is going to another editor, a wiki or a static site. It adapts the extensions other markdown tools may not read. Code and math stay unchanged, and simple TOML front matter becomes YAML:
| In Colletta | In the download |
|---|---|
A mention, [@Ada](/w/.../people/...) | plain @Ada |
An image size, | the image at its own size |
A callout, > [!NOTE] | a quote that starts with a bold Note |
==highlight==, ++inserted++, ~sub~, ^sup^ | <mark>, <ins>, <sub> and <sup> tags |
Numbered code, ```js=101 | plain ```js |
Front matter in TOML, between +++ lines | the same front matter in YAML, when it’s only key = value lines; otherwise it stays as written |
Links between documents still point at Colletta. Math, diagrams and collapsible sections are left as they are, since most tools that show markdown well already read them.
Download .html
Section titled “Download .html”The HTML file is one standalone page: the document’s title and its formatted text, styled in light colors. Images you uploaded are included in the file, up to 25 MB in all; past that, and for images from other sites, the page links to them instead. The status line says how many images stayed as links. Links between documents point at Colletta.
The file contains no scripts. Images from other sites, and uploads past the 25 MB limit, stay as links.
Copy a document
Section titled “Copy a document”Two more items in the More menu:
- Copy as markdown copies the whole document’s markdown, ready to paste into another tool or a chat.
- Copy raw .md link copies a link to the document’s markdown as a file:
https://<your Colletta address>/api/documents/<id>.md.
The raw link works for anyone who can open the document, while they’re signed in to Colletta in that browser. For
anyone else it answers “not found”, the same as for a document that doesn’t exist, so it never reveals a title. Some
browsers download a .md file instead of showing it; add ?as=text to the end of the link to see it as plain text in
a tab. Scripts and AI agents can read the same link with an API token.
Download a folder or the whole workspace
Section titled “Download a folder or the whole workspace”- A folder: Download as .zip in its sidebar menu.
- The whole workspace: Download all on the home page, or Download all (.zip) in the workspace switcher.
The zip holds the documents you have permission to export, in their folders. Uploaded images you can open go in an
_images folder, and the links to them are rewritten so they work offline. Images from other sites stay as links.
Files inside the zip keep their documents’ last edit times. Documents shared with you on their own are in a
Shared with you folder.
If you have drafts in the folder or workspace, Colletta asks first, with Include my drafts. It’s off unless you turn it on, and it covers drafts you wrote or co-author. Other people’s drafts are never included.
Comments, open suggestions and version history aren’t included.
Print or save as PDF
Section titled “Print or save as PDF”Choose Print or save as PDF in the document’s More menu. The document prints formatted, under its title, without the app around it, and always in light colors. For a PDF, choose “Save as PDF” in your browser’s print dialog.
